Harry Hole, the most controversial figure in the Norwegian police force, is sent to Thailand to solve a disturbing murder case. The victim is the Norwegian ambassador, who was stabbed before the prostitute he ordered to his motel room could arrive. What's more, pornographic images of little boys are found among his belongings. The murdered man is no ordinary diplomat, he is a good friend of the Norwegian prime minister. It's no surprise, then, that Harry and his Bangkok assistants are expected to do a quick and discreet job. Gambling debts, corruption, local gangsters and their hardened henchmen, sexual perversions, plus the tropical heat, culture shock, and the eternal battle with alcohol, all add up to a potent cocktail that Harry must drink down to the last drop.
