Description
Medieval archaeological research became an independent discipline following the work of Kálmán Szabó and then István Méri, and in recent decades our knowledge of the structure of rural settlements of the Árpád period and the characteristic house types has increased significantly. The finds of the settlements - with a few fortunate exceptions - consist of 95-100 percent pottery fragments, meaning that in some cases the question of the time limits of the settlement can only be answered with the help of a detailed analysis of the ceramics. However, the research of our pottery from the Hungarian Conquest and Árpád periods has been mainly limited to the characteristic vessel types - earthenware pots, ribbed-necked vessels - and publications that process the complete ceramic material of individual sites are still largely lacking. In this volume, five sites from the northeastern Hungarian region, originating from different geographical environments and dating from the 9th-10th centuries, are presented. The author presents the settlement used in several periods of the 19th century and the Árpád period, and the results of his ceramic analysis, with the help of which the internal chronology of the archaeological phenomena of the settlements was clarified and the absolute chronological position of the individual settlement phases was determined. Thanks to the archaeometric material examination, fundamentally new results were obtained regarding pottery technique - and not only instructive for researchers of the Árpád period.
